BARKLY SQUARE OPEN DAY 21 March 2025

The Barkly Square Community Hub will be hosting an open day on March 25th at 10am! This open day will feature tours, interactive workshops. free children's activities, gardening and art workshops, op shopping, hair and pampering sessions, live music, and food tasting. OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND CONGESTION FOCUS GROUP WITH COMMITTEE FOR BALLARAT 21 March 2025

The Consultative Committee on the Committee for Ballarat are inviting their members to a focus group on traffic congestion around Ballarat school zones, as part of The Transport Project. The project began following a survey conducted by students from Mt Clear College, in partnership with the Committee for Ballarat and Mindshop Excellence, which highlighted the growing issue of traffic congestion around school zones. Our goal is to better understand the causes of this congestion and explore potential options to improve traffic flow in and around school zones. BSIDES BALLARAT CYBERSECURITY CONFERENCE 21 March 2025

BSides is a popular international, not for profit cybersecurity conference. Federation University have decided to run a BSides Conference in Ballarat on the 3-4 of May to grow the local cybersecurity community, and to reach out to young people that are interested in Cybersecurity. BSides is being held in the Emerging Technologies Hub on the SMB campus, with a diverse range of speakers dealing with a dense amount of introductory cybersecurity information. APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN: COMMUNITY IMPACT GRANTS 2025 21 March 2025

The Community Impact Grants Program includes funding from The Courier Charity Fund, Wendouree-Delacombe Fund, James Petrie Fund, Adroit Risk and Insurance Fund, Janine Owen Fund, Advanced Cabinetry Fund, Integra Group Fund, Feed Ballarat Fund, Young Ambition Fund, and the Canny Family Fund. Applications are encouraged from organisations working to create food security, support local youth, or generate positive social change. Jennie has a long career in driving systemic change, advocating for equality, and ensuring women's voices and experiences shape policy and practice. The City of Ballarat is launching a new initiative: Electrify Your Home Ballarat. It is designed to increase your comfort and reduce the cost of your energy bills. This is a partnership with Geelong Sustainability to bring a highly successful Electric Homes Program to our city. For those that participate there is a rebate available, and the program offers solar and battery storage, heat pump hot water systems, efficient heating/cooling systems, and energy auditing and draft proofing. Domestic violence is an incredibly poignant issue, and in Australia alone there are currently an estimated two million victims. Domestic violence is a leading cause of assault, homelessness, neglect, generational disadvantage, community dysfunction, and in the most horrible cases, death. The DV Safe Phone Project exists to provide victims with a donated, hidden phone they can use in emergency situations. At this stage, more than 10,000 phones have been delivered to victims and more than 2,000 kilograms of e-waste has been diverted from landfill. The 73rd Ballarat Begonia Festival took place over the long weekend. The festivities featured a parade sponsored by Power FM, with many of our members participating, such as BLOC Music Theatre, Kryal Castle, Ballarat African Association, PetStock, and Sovereign Hill. Liam Downes also took to the the stage to show his culinary skills, and Mrs Browne Bakes was there selling her delectable treats all weekend! BARLKLY SQUARE OPEN DAY 6 March 2025

The Barkly Square Open Day is an opportunity for the Barkly Square Community Hub to showcase their services and programs. It’ll be held on Sat 29th March From 10am – 2pm. We’ll have activations including art and food workshops, games, live music and roving theatre performers. Voice FM will hold a sausage sizzle, the Barkly Square café will be open plus we’ll have the Coffee Will Travel coffee van in our courtyard. We’re inviting the local community, of all ages, to come along and discover Barkly Square as well as offering an opportunity for visitors to chat face-to-face with the Barkly Square community and visit their community spaces. BRIDGE MALL REDEVELOPMENT TO OFFICIALLY OPEN 6 March 2025

The Bridge Mall redevelopment will officially open with a fun-filled community celebration on Saturday 15 March. The official opening marks a major milestone in the transformation of our city's oldest retail precinct, which has already led to new investment in the Bridge Mall. The City of Ballarat is launching a new event in 2025, designed to activate direct engagement with the community. The Let’s Chat Ballarat Community Expo will be held next month at Civic Hall. Let's Chat Ballarat will provide community members with an opportunity to provide in-person feedback, engage with Councillors and staff and learn more about local services and city's priorities. ICN VICTORIA ANNOUNCE BALLARAT MAJOR EVENTS PRECINCT INDUSTRY BRIEFING

ICN Victoria is excited to announce the Ballarat Major Events Precinct Industry Briefing - your opportunity to connect with key stakeholders and explore supply chain opportunities for this transformative project. Development Victoria is delivering upgrades to Ballarat's Eureka Stadium as part of the Victorian Government's Ballarat Sports Package. The broader Eureka Sports Precinct will also be boosted with a brand-new athletics track and pavilion (situated south of Eureka Stadium) for the local track and field community in and around Ballarat. DEVELOPMENTS AT THE BALLARAT AIRPORT

‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹The City of Ballarat is celebrating following an announcement that the Federal Government will contribute $1.1 million to repurpose the ageing terminal building at Ballarat Airport into an aeromedical patient transfer and emergency services facility. As part of the project, the aircraft parking area immediately in front will be expanded to accommodate larger aircraft. To read more head here. Additionally, Stage one of the runway upgrade project, which has increased the runway length from 1,2500 to 1,800 meters, marks the completion of the first stage of a transformational two stage upgrade envisioned for the airport. NEW RULES TO PROTECT WORKERS MENTAL HEALTH

The Allan Labor Government is introducing new regulations to strengthen protections for mental health in the workplace. Recognizing psychosocial hazards-such as bullying, harassment, and exposure to trauma-as equally important as physical hazards, the new rules will require employers to identify and control these risks. In response to key mental health reviews, the regulations are set to be introduced in October and take effect on December 1, with a Compliance Code to guide employers. WorkSafe's Work Well program continues to support businesses in creating mentally healthy workplaces, as work-related mental injury claims rise. Read more »

YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID 27 February 2025

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants how to provide initial support to a young person (aged 12-18) who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until professional help is received or the crisis resolves. JOIN THE BALLARAT WOMEN'S FUND 13 February 2025

The Ballarat Women's Fund is a giving circle membership model where each member can vote on how the funds raised are used to address the significant issues women face in Ballarat resulting from gendered violence, domestic or family violence, access to safe and affordable housing, or equal opportunities in the workforce. On March 6th, the Pick Our Project event will take place to hear the pitches of three shortlisted projects tackling issues against women, with members voting to select the recipient of a $30,000 grant. AI GROUP RELEASE COMMENT ON PROPOSED US TARIFFS

Ai Group has released a comment on the recent developments regarding tariffs on Australian goods during the Trump administration. CEO Innes Willox outlined the harmful consequences of enacting these tariffs to the economy and security of both nations. Willox stated Ai Group worked with DFAT, negotiators, and the government during the previous administration to ensure there were no tariffs on Australian-made aluminium, steel, and iron and it will do so again to pursue the same goal for Australia during this term. NOTIFIABLE INCIDENTS IN THE WORKPLACE

WorkSafe's HSR Support team has received questions from HSRs about workplace incidents and what constitutes a notifiable incident. Under Victorian OHS laws, employers are required to notify WorkSafe about fatalities, serious injuries and certain health and safety incidents in a workplace. These are known as 'notifiable incidents'. Employers have a duty to notify WorkSafe when they become aware of an incident. Incidents should be reported to WorkSafe Advisory by calling 132 360. The employer must make a copy of the notifiable incident record available for inspection by a HSR if an incident relates to any members of their DWG. You can read more here. Read more »

As a part of reform measures outlined in the Migration Strategy, the Australian Government introduced the National Innovation Visa and changes to the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) (subclass 482) visa, which is being reformed and has been renamed as the Skills in Demand (subclass482) visa on 7 December 2024.These changes enable Australian industry to attract migrants who make a significant contribution to the Australian economy, and fill positions where no Australian workers are available. The annual Australian Industry Outlook for 2025 survey released this week shows that our CEOs are aware of the current challenges, expect another tough year ahead but are taking clear steps to work their way through the obstacles they face. WORLD HERITAGE BID ENDORSED BY FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

35 years of advocacy is about to pay off for the entirety of the region. Today, the Australian Government has provided their full support for the Victorian Goldfields to acquire World Heritage Listing! Susan Fayad of City of Ballarat and Trevor Budge of City of Greater Bendigo have worked tirelessly to unite 15 Local Government areas, and the economic benefit for all is extensive. More than 2.5 million new visitors could visit in the next 10 years as a result, bringing a spending increase of more than $500 million. Heritage Victoria have also committed resources and support, and co-patrons the Hon. Denis Napthine AO and the Hon. John Brumby AO have added significant weight to the advocacy. The region is now set for inclusion on Australia's World Heritage Tentative List, which now allows us to progress submitting a full nomination to UNESCO any time from February 2026. This is an incredible step for the region, and a wonderful reflection of the passionate work that allowed the bid to reach this point. Read more »

CoB BEGINS COMMUNITY SATISFACTION SURVEY 30 January 2025

The City of Ballarat has begun a 6-week Community Satisfaction Survey to understand how well Council is delivering services to the community. As a result, some residents may receive a telephone call from now until mid-March from an independent market research agency, National Field Services. Similar surveys will be undertaken across all other Victorian councils in the coming months as part of the mandatory Local Government Performance Reporting Framework. NEW LUCAS HOSPITAL TO MEET BALLARAT'S SURGICAL NEEDS WITH INTEGRA GROUP 30 January 2025

The developer of a new hospital in Ballarat's west says the project will address the city's critical need for more surgical theatres by providing space for "lesser complex" procedures. Integra Group general manager Matt McCabe told The Courier the private facility, which will be located on the corner of Lilburne Street and Eleanor Drive in Lucas, would be a project of regional significance. "After a huge amount of consultation, the planning and design process has landed on a six theatre, 24 overnight bed, low-acuity private hospital along with supporting allied health facilities," he said. The City of Ballarat is dedicated to combating gendered and family violence by expanding frontline services, notably through the DV Safe Phone project, which redistributes donated mobile phones to domestic violence survivors. The initiative will add six new donation points across local facilities, aiming to facilitate access to free phones for victim survivors through partnerships with the CoRE Alliance and CHIVIC. Local businesses are encouraged to support this cause by hosting donation boxes or repurposing old fleet mobile phones, thereby aiding victims while also reducing e-waste. Dr Harman has been awarded the Order of Australia (AM) for her significant service to social change leadership and to the community of regional Victoria in the Australia Day Honours for 2025. Jessie is one of our very special volunteers each year but it was 26 years ago when Dr Jessie Harman said yes to joining a club that would ultimately change her life. BSIDES CYBERSECURITY CONFERENCE WITH FEDERATION UNIVERSITY 23 January 2025

BSides is an international cybersecurity conference run by local cybersecurity community members. The first BSides conference was held in Las Vegas in 2009, and in 2024, over 1,000 BSides events were held in 255 cities in 65 countries. BSides conferences are now held in most Australian capitals. Gaby fought a long battle with illness and her strength saw her through many years. She was a formidable woman that escaped violent circumstances to start a new life with her daughter, Kim, in Ballarat and Sturt Street was more vibrant due to their feature on it for many years. We send our heartfelt condolences to her friends and family.
