World War I enlistees were recognised recently with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and tree avenue alongside Sunnyside Mill. Â The avenue and plaque recognise the service of 27 woollen mill workers who enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces, despite working in a protected industry, with more than half making the ultimate sacrifice in combat. Â The dedication event, taking place on the 106th anniversary of the original commemorative tree planting, was the result of research and collaboration between Mount Pleasant History Group, Ballarat Regional Trades and Labour Council, Ballarat RSL, City of Ballarat, Diona and Central Highlands Water. Â Work on the Ballarat Sewer Build, a $25 million investment in delivering wastewater services and security for the next 100 years, began the conversation among the groups involved. Â Two trees opposite Sunnyside Mill needed to be removed to make way for the new sewer and the consultation and conversation around this highlighted the history of the tree avenue and the opportunity to build back better.
