The BMI is Ballarat’s oldest cultural organisation. Established in 1859, the BMI has played, and continues to play, a leading role in shaping Ballarat’s artistic and cultural identity.

With one of the oldest operating independent lending libraries in Australia, and home to a very large collection of newspapers, books, and photos, the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute continues to be a valuable asset for the Ballarat community.

Our building provides a majestic backdrop for a range of events including concerts, conferences, presentations, performances, formal dinners, parties, cinema, and training.

The exquisite heritage features offers elegance of years gone by whilst providing state of the art facilities including a full professional sound system, a recently updated lighting rig, and internet access throughout.

All spaces are fully accessible via the lift from the front foyer, and there is an onsite finishing kitchen.
